Dear Kolb Families,
On behalf of the Kolb Staff, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back to another great year at Kolb School! Hopefully summer break has offered you some time to relax and recharge for another exciting school year!
We will again have many new faces around Kolb this upcoming school year. We have a number of new staff members that are eager to get the new school year underway. We also have many new students that have moved into the community over the summer. Please take the opportunity to meet the new teachers as well as your new neighbors and welcome them to the Kolb community!
We have several things that have changed over the summer. Our PBIS (Positive Behavior program) team was in over the summer transforming Kolb into a world of children’s books and characters for our “Readers are Leaders” literacy theme this year. Chromebooks have made their way down to fourth grade students beginning this year. All fourth and fifth grade students will have a Chromebook to use in the classroom on a daily basis to enhance our curriculum! We have changed our grading scale this year to match the local high schools. The new grading scale will eliminate the conduct letter grade, and students will instead be assessed based on the Illinois Social Emotional Learning Standards. The biggest change that has taken place is the implementation of a free breakfast and lunch program. This year, ALL students are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch throughout the year!!!
It takes a partnership between the home and the school to foster student success. We made great strides last year in making Kolb an inviting environment to parents, but want to continue to grow that family-school relationship even further. Keep your eyes open for different volunteer opportunities in the different classrooms throughout the year. Our Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 31st from 6:00 to 7:30. Open House is a great opportunity to get into the school and meet the staff that will be working with your child. I urge you to join the Kolb PTO at this time as well; they do a fantastic job of providing fun, educational, and community building programs for our students and their families! Being a part of the PTO is another opportunity to get into the school and build that home-school partnership! We look forward to working with you again this year!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to working with you over the course of the school year to ensure we meet the needs of all students!
Sincerely,
Dan McDermott
Principal
